We started the week with hot green water and ended with clean water but still over 88 degrees. Bait (Alewives, Cigar Minnows, Scaled Sardine, Goggle Eyes and small Hardtails) has been around all week. The variety of fish has increased and catches were better. Kings, Spanish, Bonita and Red Drum were among the species caught. Thursday started our current report and the pier was very crowded. Rail space was a premium Thursday afternoon. It did get some better after the weekend.
A few King Mackerel returned and one nice fish was decked Saturday. Brian K. got the big fish for the week. Hachid N. also got a nice one Monday. Tommy L. had started the week with the fish he caught during the crowd Thursday. Several other small Kings were caught during the week. Natural bait got more hits than lures.
Red Drum were here all week and were ravaging almost anything in the shallow water. Too many fish to count were caught and numerous others were lost to broken lines and to the pilings. George and Phil had a fun afternoon Sunday with the “Bulls” They each caught and released several Reds. Live Alewives on a Carolina Rig was a guaranteed bite.
Summer Bonita were here a few days during the week. Small live bait on a freeline with a fluorocarbon leader was your best chance to get bitten. Numerous fish were lost but several made it onto the gaff. Tommy L., George M and Jayden, a 12 year old visiting from Newnan, GA, each got big Bonita.
